Fire & Gas Mapping studies aim to assess a detector layout against the pre-specified performance targets for detecting a reference flame or gas cloud. Performance targets for specific areas of a facility are generally agreed in advance of the study and aligned with the overall Fire & Gas Safety Philosophy and applicable standards or good practice guides.
Flame detection mapping determines the number of detectors triggered in each location as the reference flame is moved across the assessment area. The method requires a 3D representation of the facility in order to fully account for the blockages to visibility created by the equipment. Existing 3D models can be imported in a range of formats and models used for explosion assessment can be used directly. If no 3D model is available representations of major obstructions can be incorporated manually based on layout and elevation drawings. Detector layout can then be optimized to ensure defined performance targets are achieved.
Any restrictions in detector mounting for access and maintenance (such as detector height) can be accounted for in the optimization. For both fire and gas mapping, the relative contribution from each detector to the overall coverage is determined. This drives the optimization by
